Thermal agents, heat and cold, can be used therapeutically to control joint pain and inflammation. The use of moist heat has been clinically proven to be effective in decreasing arthritis pain. Cold is used to control sudden onset of inflammation or swelling. Using the following modalities at home can be an important part of your long term arthritis pain management.
General Tips:
Heat:
Causes vasodilatation or opening up of blood vessels which can increase blood flow. Use heat to decrease pain and stiffness, and improve flexibility on joints.
Cold:
Causes vasoconstriction or narrowing of blood vessels. Use cold to decrease sudden onset of pain combined with soft tissue inflammation or swelling. Long term bony nodules on arthritic joints will not decrease with cold agents however.
